01.09.2023 – Boysen Group wins second major battery housing order and builds new plant in Nagold

CEO Rolf Geisel announces 100-million-euro investment / Another transformation coup consolidates position in the future market of e-mobility and secures jobs at domestic locations

Calw district. The Boysen Group, based in Altensteig, has secured its second major order for the production of battery housings for electric vehicles - and thus set another decisive milestone on its transformation path. The contract awarded by a premium car manufacturer from Baden-Württemberg is linked to the construction of a new Boysen production plant in the INGpark Nagold Gäu, in which the group of companies will invest around 100 million euros, according to managing director Rolf Geisel.

According to Geisel, a factory with 38,000 square metres of production space is planned, which will be built on a 75,000 square metre site in the "Eisberg II" area (Gewann Bürgeräcker), "which means we still have space available for a possible expansion". In its appearance, the factory will be modelled on a battery housing. "In addition, we will come up with other special architectural features," promises Geisel.

In addition to a major contract for BMW, which Rolf Geisel announced last year, this is now the second transformation coup for the exhaust technology specialist Boysen: "Entering the race for the current contract award was a strategic decision. In order to be able to realise the first battery housing location of the Boysen Group in our home region and thus create the basis for securing the future of our employees in the northern Black Forest, we put everything on the line against a competitor from Eastern Europe. In the case of Nagold, we are talking about 250 jobs."

For Geisel, this is all the more remarkable: "At BMW, we are talking about battery housings made of drawn sheet metal parts. In Nagold, on the other hand, we will produce housings from extruded aluminium profiles, which means that the material aluminium - combined with the corresponding production technologies - will be used on a large scale for the first time at Boysen."

The start of production at BBKN Boysen Batteriekomponenten Nagold is planned for the end of 2025. At the new site, Boysen will also rely on the use of state-of-the-art energy and environmental technology in order to operate the production largely CO2-neutral. According to Geisel, among other things, a photovoltaic area of around 60,000 square metres is planned.

With BBKN, the Boysen Group will increase the number of its worldwide locations to 28. Six of these locations will be in the Calw district alone. The headquarters has been the development and administration centre in Altensteig since 1949. In 1972, the Turmfeld production plant also went into operation in Altensteig, which was expanded and converted into a CO2-optimised factory in 2011. The BAK I plant in Simmersfeld has been in operation since 2001 and was significantly expanded in 2018 with the BAK II plant. Also in Simmersfeld, the Boysen Development Centre for Hydrogen Technologies is currently being built and will go into operation in 2024. And the city of Nagold will also be able to designate two Boysen locations in the future, after the BIN Boysen Innovation Centre has already been located on the Wolfsberg since 2014.

And if Rolf Geisel has his way, Boysen will continue to grow - "also at home": "BMW has enabled us to enter the future market of e-mobility and thus the prospect of corresponding follow-up orders. Now another weighty player is placing its trust in us, making us more and more a force to be reckoned with in the field of battery housing production. We will build on this."
