02.02.2017 – Boysen Group sets the course for the future in 2016

The exhaust technology specialist is planning its next big site expansion / Largest construction project in the company’s history is being carried out in Simmersfeld

Altensteig. All-time high revenues and successful efforts in pioneering new orders characterise the 2016 business year for the Boysen Group. Amongst other things, the supplier from Altensteig (northern Black Forest) has been tasked by Daimler Trucks with the Europe-wide series production of exhaust technology for the successful Mercedes-Benz Actros truck model. As a result, the group’s largest production plant to date will be built in Simmersfeld.

CEO Rolf Geisel reports revenues of 1.6 billion euros for 2016 – this is an increase of 10 percent in comparison to the previous year (1.46 billion euros): “We have completed a very eventful year with many challenges. This gives us all the more reason to be satisfied with the result. All set goals were achieved.” 3,600 employees are responsible for this – almost 10 percent more than at the end of 2015 – at 17 sites worldwide. Geisel predicts revenues of around 1.75 billion euros for the 2017 business year already underway.

The signs point to further growth “because almost all of the contract awarding processes in 2016 where Boysen was amongst the candidates were decided in our favour.” As a result, Geisel is heralding the next large growth phase of the group of companies, which has already increased its number of sites from 10 to 17 between 2012 and 2014.

The exhaust technology specialist is currently building new production plants in Mexico and India for its automotive customers Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz – as well as a further independent plant at the existing site in Plauen in Saxony.

“However, the high point of the forthcoming building measures will doubtlessly be our new plant for truck exhaust technology in Simmersfeld, with 60,000 square metres of production and storage space,” explains Geisel and adds, “It was probably a one-time decision to take on a project of this size for our company. For us, this production plant is the future flagship for the Boysen Group. The building’s architecture will also express this aspiration.”

According to Geisel, four years of preparatory work have gone into this future-oriented project, which has now also helped Boysen achieve the desired breakthrough in the commercial vehicle market. The group of companies had built a second development centre in Nagold with state-of-the-art testing equipment specifically for this purpose. With the support of experienced colleagues from Altensteig, since 2014 Nagold has been carrying out development work for the exhaust system, which will be used in the new Mercedes-Benz Actros from 2019. Daimler decided in the summer of 2016 that Boysen will also take over the Europe-wide series production of this exhaust system. In connection with the major truck contract, a second production plant will be built in Europe alongside the project in Simmersfeld, although the location still has to be decided.

Three new plants for car exhaust technology and two new plants for truck exhaust technology: As a result, the number of Boysen sites will increase to 22 in the next few years. This should create over 1,000 new jobs, including 400 in Simmersfeld. “Once again, all our resources are called upon – both personnel and financial,” states Geisel, referring to the upcoming investment, which “will reach a total of approximately 200 million euros for 2017 and 2018.”

When the new production plants are all in series production from 2019, “this will successively increase our revenue volume.” Accordingly, Geisel forecasts revenues of 2.0 billion euros by 2019 and 2.5 billion euros by 2023.

Despite the emissions scandal, “which clearly dominated and overshadowed the 2016 automotive year”, and which has as yet unforeseeable consequences for automotive combustion engines, Geisel sees the future of the Boysen Group as secured, particularly due to the breakthrough in the commercial vehicle market – “All trucks and buses that are used for long-distance journeys will continue to be powered by combustion engines for the next 30 years. In conjunction with increasingly tight emission standards and the exhaust treatment components required for this purpose, this opens up further potential for growth for us up to 2030. Even with sharply declining shares for the combustion engine, the initial course for further growth and preserving jobs at Boysen is set for beyond 2030.”
