15.09.2022 – Boysen Group wins major contract for battery housing production

Exhaust technology specialist takes important transformation step towards e-mobility: CEO Rolf Geisel puts the order volume at a three-digit million amount per year

Altensteig. The Boysen Group, which specialises in exhaust technology, is pushing ahead with technological transformation at a rapid pace: "After successful development work at our headquarters in Altensteig," announces Boysen CEO Rolf Geisel, "we have won a major contract to manufacture battery housings for the electric cars of a well-known premium manufacturer." Geisel puts the order volume at a three-digit million amount per year.

This is linked to the construction of a new plant in Hungary, which is scheduled to go into operation in mid-2025. "We will invest around 130 million euros in Hungary and create up to 400 jobs," says Geisel, who adds: "With a production area of more than 50,000 square metres, we are talking about by far the largest location that our group of companies has realised to date." According to the customer's specifications, the new production facility should and must be operated completely

The CEO pays great tribute to those responsible in project management, technical project planning and his engineers in technical equipment construction, who have worked intensively on possible product transfers from exhaust technology to electromobility over the past few years and thus laid the foundation for the current success story. "Starting from the basic idea, we have taken the path here from the silencer shell to the battery housing. The realisation of this idea gained extreme momentum last year, and so we were able to show our customers that we are ready by means of corresponding prototypes."

With this major order, Rolf Geisel believes that the Boysen Group has now joined the circle of important and serious players in the field of e-mobility: "Although we have already been manufacturing various structural components for e-vehicles at our site in Simmersfeld since 2021, the dimensions are not comparable. We wanted to prove to our customers that we can also master this transformation and the associated challenges. With the battery housings, the first major milestone has been reached. We fought hard for this success with great effort. The associated new production technologies such as adhesive bonding technology as well as plastic, cathodic dip and powder coating show Boysen the way to the future. And we will now continue to build on this.

In addition to new product groups for alternative drives – among other things, Boysen also plans to put its first liquid hydrogen tanks for heavy trucks on the road for testing from 2023 –Geisel sees the future of the group of companies in the field of energy technology: after entering the business with stationary liquid battery storage systems in 2019, construction is scheduled to begin next autumn for Boysen's own hydrogen centre in Simmersfeld. In addition, he is also planning a 15-hectare wind and solar farm in Simmersfeld, which will supply the entire northern Black Forest with green electricity.

For the current business year, Geisel is aiming to exceed the turnover mark of three billion euros. Even after 50 years of service, he does not consider his life's work at Boysen to be over: "The primary goal of our foundation company is to preserve our jobs. And my team and I will continue to set the course for this in the coming years. The large order shows that we are on the right track.
